Yellow lentils (also called as: Moong Dal or split moong beans) are very common in south Asia and are one of the mainstay foods that form the basic Indian diet. Yellow Lentil is in fact the split and de-skinned version of moong beans. Moong beans plant is an annual, legume plant belonging to the pea family (Fabaceae).

Because it is highly rich in nutrients, versatile in nature and healthy, it is used across the world. It has a very mild and sweet flavor, and this makes it suitable in many Indian delicacies such as dal, Khichdi, kheer, halwa etc. Yellow lentils are also used in preparations of snacks. It is also used to make pancakes, dosas and different flavored soups.

It is native to the Indian subcontinent where it has been cultivated for over 4000 years. It was originally cultivated in India and other counties of South Asia. Later it was cultivated in various Asian countries, particularly in India, China, Korea and Thailand. The plant requires dry tropical and sub-tropical climate which makes the Caribbean and some areas of Africa also suitable for cultivation. 

Yellow lentils have high-proteins content and other nutrients which have great health benefits. It has high plant-based proteins which makes it a good optionfor protein source for vegetarians and vegans. It has high fiber content which keeps the digestive tract healthy. Due to this property, it is easily digestible and hence recommended over other lentils. It is also recommended for daily consumption as it contains a lot of nutrients and does not have negative effects. It also improves the consistency of the dal when mixed with other lentils, enhancing taste and right texture.

Yellow Lentils are perhaps commonly referred to as ‘Superfood’ because of their nutritional benefits. It contains a lot of nutrients such as Iron, Calcium and potassium, copper magnesium, cobalamin fiber, and folate. It is also one of the great sources of various vitamins including vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin B6. It also has oxidative agents such as polyphenols and flavonoids and specific amino acids.

Yellow lentils are consumed by human beings in numerous ways. It assists in enhancing the metabolic system of the body and facilitates digestion and easily shedding weight in the process. It has potassium and iron which playan important role in ensuring that the heart is healthy, apart from this it also regulates high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats. It is also beneficial in diabetes management because it is low in glycemic index. It assists in reducing the blood glucose and the fats level. Yellow lentils also help in regulating insulin production in the body thus maintaining blood sugar level.

Yellow lentils also have anti-inflammatory properties which help to avoid any digestion problem. It is known to be a healthy food to eat to maintain good health. It also has been confirmed that it has properties that increase blood circulation in the body. They are also ideal when it comes to nutrition of bones because of the high calcium percentage levels.

According to the latest figures, the estimated production volume of moong in the financial year 2023 was greater than 3 million metric tons for India. However, the production volume of this food-grain has, many times, been in an uptrend in recent days.

India exported 7769 shipments of Moong Dal in the period from Mar 2023 to Feb 2024. These exports were sold by 687 Indian Exporters to 1,775 Buyers which has shown an increase of 22% compared with previous twelve months.
